Different Types of Eyeliners (And Their Best Uses)

In the world of makeup, it can sometimes be overwhelming to find the perfect eyeliner for you. There are so many different types of liners out there.

There are pencil liners, liquid liners, gel, felt tip or you could even just use a smudge of eyeshadow. On top of all that, the brush size you use will have a different finish too. No one eyeliner is better than the other. It’s just a matter of what look you want to achieve.

Liquid Eyeliners

Liquid eyeliner is probably the most common used eyeliner because of its precision finish. The tale of the eyeliner wing can be as thin as your brush can be.

Recently, felt tip liquid eyeliner has added more and easier ways to apply eyeliner. Different makeup companies have been coming out with tools to make applying liquid liner more efficient. Stilla has a wonderful felt tip liquid liner that has a great all day wear. It applies effortlessly to your eyelid. It even works well if you have oily eyelids. Waterproof formulas are longer lasting than non-waterproof formulas (obviously), so it’s a great option for those that need something that will last all day long.

The firmer your application brush is, the easier it will be to apply. Think of a paintbrush, brushes with more compact hairs or bristles will give more of a precision finish. Brushes with compact bristles are great for achieving that classic cat-eye look.

For some of you, it may be hard to master the art of applying liquid liner perfectly. It really does require having a steady hand. Just like anything else though, it’ll become easier with practice so don’t give up!

Eyeliner Pencil (Kohl)

It seems like kohl has been in makeup bags for years. Pencil liner is probably one of the easiest to apply and carry around in your makeup bag. A common look people use a pencil eyeliner for is a smokey eye. You can control how sharp and precise your line is by how sharp your pencil is; the duller your pencil the smokier your look. The one downside of using a pencil liner is that you’ll likely need to re-apply more often than if you were to use a liquid. If you’re looking for an all-day liner, a pencil is probably not your best route.

Using Eyeshadow as an Eyeliner

Using eyeshadow as eyeliner is a great way to keep your makeup bag compact. You can use a small angled brush to apply your eyeshadow of choice. Applying eyeshadow as a liner will give a smolder finish and is actually easier to blend up into your eyeshadow.

PRO TIP: If you wet your brush first it will give more of a precision finish than a smokier finish. Don’t be afraid to play around.

When using liners you need to be careful along the waterline of your eyes. Being that your waterline produces liquid throughout the day it will fall down throughout the day. Not only does it have the potential to bleed it could be very dangerous to sensitive eyes. Bacteria from your pencil can be pushed directly into the eye, potentially causing infections and styes

Gel Eyeliner

Gel eyeliner offers a high wax content while most eyeliners just contain wax it as a part of their formula.  Gel liners are great because they are typically longer lasting! They give that same precise finish as a liquid liner and it’s consistency makes it easier to work with.

Glitter Eyeliner

Looking for that extra sparkle in your look? Glitter eyeliner may be the solution. Typically, the glitter eyeliner comes in a liquid form. You can also use loose glitter if you wanted but the application is a little more complicated. You would need to use a primer or something sticky to act as the glue to hold the sparkle in place on the eye. Glitter eyeliner can really brighten up a basic makeup look.

Colored Eyeliner

Colored eyeliners are used a lot on the runways today. It’s a great way to really spice up a look without having to change a ton. Colored eyeliner typically comes in the liquid for but you can also find many colors in pencil liners and even ones with glitter!
