Beauty is hard work. The perfect face doesn’t just put itself on in the morning. we spend hours of our lives primping and perfecting to achieve the perfect look. But let’s be honest, not every MUA is created equal.
For some, creating the perfect makeup look is like second nature, but not everyone has the natural ability or the steady hand it takes to pull off some makeup looks. We’ve put together this list of beauty hacks for perfect makeup to help you girls (and you fabulous boys who share the love of makeup) get your looks on point!
Exfoliate Your Skin
Generally, you want to make sure you’re exfoliating twice a week. This may differ depending on your skin type. Makeup will never cover texture, regardless of what you’re doing- so make sure that you’re exfoliating!
There are tons of natural ways to exfoliate, like Himalayan pink salt and honey. However, it’s important to note that if you can eat it- you probably won’t get the best results from it. We use Comfortzone. It’s gentle enough to sleep in (and we have)
Use Less Product
Use a little bit of lotion on your face before laying down your foundation. Not only does this help with a sheer appearance, it allows you to use less product. All you have to is put a thin layer of lotion and apply your foundation before the lotion dries completely.
Eyeliner + Flame = Gel Liner
Most eyeliners pencils give a thin and hard to apply line. Hold the tip of the eyeliner pencil over the heat of a lighter or match for 1 second and allow it to cool for at least 20 seconds before applying it to your eyes. This will change the texture of your eyeliner into a gel-like substance. The result is a much bolder line and an easier to apply product.
DIY Eyeliner Guide
Use a spoon or a credit card to pull off those sharp cat-eye and winged-liner looks. Simply place the edge of your desired tool on the outside edge of where you want to draw your shape. By tracing the spoon or credit card with your liner pencil or liquid liner, you can achieve a clean and uniform line every time. Once you have your shape drawn, fill it in between the lines as you would with a coloring book.
Contour with E’s and 3’s
Using a contour stick, simply draw the shape of an ‘E’ or a ‘3’ depending on which side of your face you are working on. Starting above the brow moving outward toward the temple, next bring your line down around the bottom of your eye above the cheekbone, then working back out around the cheekbone and underneath. Result should look like you have an ‘E’ and a ‘3’ framing your face. From there, Contour and Highlight as you normally would to achieve your perfect look.
The ‘No Makeup’ Look
If you’re looking for a quick way to get a ‘no makeup’ make up look, try taking bronzer to the top of your eyelids to add a bit of color. This will keep in line with the natural look while allowing you to warm up your look.
Filling in Your Brows
To define your brows and your look, fill them in! You can use eyeshadow pots or pallets, but you’ll need to make sure you’re choosing a color consistent with your brows and use an angled brush.
You’ll want to start at the arch, as that’s where the most hair grows naturally and move against the grain of the hair. To finish the brow, you’ll move your brush the direction of the hair. You want to make sure that you're depositing color underneath. Not only will this give a clean brow, it will prevent people from accidentally wiping off your brows during a hug (or on the dance floor).
Comb Your Brows
Eyebrow hair a little astray? Need to blend your brow-fill? A washed off mascara comb is one of the best tools for diffusing the color in your brows and making sure the hair is all resting the same direction.
Stop Shadow Pigment from Ruining Your Look
The easiest way to prevent this is to do your shadow first, but if you’re like us- you like to prep your skin first before doing your shadow. To avoid those annoying pigments ruining your look, pat on a bit of loose powder underneath your eyes before applying your shadow. Whatever does fall can be easily wiped away with a fan brush thanks to the powder underneath your eyes.
Eyeliner First, Lashes Second
Always put on your eyeliner before putting on false eyelashes. This will help create a nice clean line and give you a little wiggle room when putting on your lashes.
Perfect Cupid’s Bow
For a perfect cupid’s bow lipstick, the easiest and quickest way is to take a lip liner in the same shade as your lipstick and create an "X" at your Cupid's bow. Then, apply your lipstick as you normally would for the perfect pout.
White Eyeliner Hacks
White eyeliner is great for a few reasons. First, when you are tired or fighting dark circles, you can use white eyeliner on your bottom lid to hide the appearance of a hangover or lack of sleep. Alternately, using white eyeliner as a base coat on your top lids will make any color pop and appear much more vibrant.
For this hack, simply mix a bit of peppermint oil into your chapstick or lip gloss. This is a safe way to achieve fuller lips without using a lip plumper tool or lip injections.
Keep Your Brushes Clean
It’s very important to clean your makeup brushes regularly. Brushes can get caked with makeup, preventing a flawless finish to your look. Oils and bacteria can also build up in your brushes, and unless you clean your brushes weekly, these could lead to a skin breakout.
